The UK government has issued a £49 million tender to integrate open banking technology into its Gov.UK Pay payments platform, aiming to enhance payment processing capabilities across the public sector.
Gov.UK Pay: Supporting Digital Payments Across Sectors
Gov.UK Pay is widely used by central government, local authorities, police forces, and NHS teams for digital payments. The platform supports over 1,000 public sector services and has processed more than 94 million transactions since 2016.
The Government Digital Service (GDS) is looking for a payment service provider (PSP) to support Gov.UK Pay, focusing on credit and debit card payments and open banking (pay by bank) transactions.
Contract Details
- Value: £49.2 million
- Duration: Initial 36-month period from July 2025, with two 12-month extension options
- Onboarding Period: 12 months before service provision begins in 2026
Currently, Gov.UK Pay uses Stripe for local authorities, police, and government-owned charitable groups, while central government, arm’s length bodies, and NHS payments are processed through Government Banking’s PSP, Worldpay.
