In a major move towards digital transformation, Walmart announced the rollout of digital shelf labels (DSL) to 2,300 stores across the U.S. by 2026. This initiative follows a successful trial at a Texas location, where the technology proved to streamline pricing updates and enhance both customer and associate experiences.
Developed by the Vision Group, DSL technology allows Walmart to efficiently manage over 120,000 product prices with thousands of weekly updates. Associates can now handle price tags through an app, significantly improving inventory management, order fulfillment, and customer interactions.
“The transition to digital shelf labels is a game-changer for Walmart, our customers, and our associates,” stated Daniela Boscan, food & consumable team lead at Walmart’s Texas location where DSL was trialed. “It is not only about improving efficiency and customer satisfaction but also about integrating sustainability into our work, in this case, to help reduce operational waste.”
This digital leap positions Walmart ahead in the retail technology race, especially as Amazon Fresh recently announced a rollback of their ‘Just Walk Out’ technology from grocery stores across the U.S. Instead, Amazon is shifting to smart shopping carts that allow customers to scan items and make automatic payments as they shop.
Walmart’s embrace of digital shelf labels marks a significant step in modernizing their stores, enhancing operational efficiency, and providing a seamless shopping experience for customers.
